Probably 98% of timing chains are replaced long before they reach the wear limit. Considering the potentially catastrophic damage caused by a broken chain in relation to the purchase price of a new chain, it rarely makes sense to reassemble the engine with the old chains.

Incidentally, the early 2l Dinos had different chains, distinguishable by the roller diameter.

The subsequent 308 and 328 models were then equipped with timing belts. A topic worthy of its own dissertation.

From the Ferrari 348 onwards, things get exciting again, which gives us the opportunity to refer to our blog entry with the funny pun on the subject of tensioning pulleys. It gets exciting because Ferrari installs the engine longitudinally instead of transversely from the 348 onwards. The belt drive, which was still easily accessible in the 308/328, is therefore between the engine and the passenger compartment. Consequently, the engine has to be removed to change the timing belt. Although only one belt was installed instead of two, as in the earlier models, a little more has to be budgeted for the procedure.
