Newsletter - We put a goat in your trunk

Ziege

Dear Dino friend,
We put a goat in your trunk!

The Dino 208/308 GT4 has a unique trunk carpet. To our knowledge, the pattern does only exist in that particular vehicle. For decades, the material was unobtainium, thus we have seen a variety of interesting improvisations in the trunks. For a few years now, the GT4 has been getting the attention that was due to it and therefore the demand in faithful material has increased. We have already had a small amount of the material made and also Dino Friend Adrian took care for a little production run but the demand was still not satisfied at all. We received many pre orders via our website dinoparts.de and the chat forum ferrarichat.com, so that we had to concern ourselves about the reproduction again. Some of the involved suppliers didn’t exist anymore or didn’t have the production documentation available anymore - so we had to start over again from the begin.

From the very beginning:
Firstly, the material was analyzed because we had to make sure that we are producing an absolutely concur correct copy of the fabric. The analysis showed that the material is from a mixture of goat hair and cotton. That made Alfredo from our Team go off to shave the neighbor’s goat which we could luckily avoid and issue the order to a yarn specialist. In the second step, the yarn is dyed in its color. There were three types of colors existing in the trunks: red/black, blue/black, beige/black. About 70% were beige, 30% were blue and only a very small percentage was red.

While comparing the dyed yarn to the original samples, again the question occurred, to what extent the sample deviates from the fabric’s as-new condition. Of course, the color of the samples has faded partially during the past 40 years. In terms of the blue yarn, the dyer nailed it with the first production run. The brown one needed several passages but in the end in turned out perfect as well. Below a picture of the color samples:

Then, the final yarn-product had to be woven and due to the required amount, most enquired suppliers made fun of our requests. Our German car suppliers scrap more yarn than we had at our disposal during their machine setup process and the tourist weaver, who we found at the beach in our holidays would have been busy doing our work for his entire life time (and he didn’t have a goat). Fortunately, we eventually found one of the last hand-weaving company in Germany, which conducted our order very professionally from the very beginning. The result was remarkable.

The next step was the coating of the carpet back and the cutting.

For several weeks now, we are again able to deliver the carpet in every version, blue, brown and red for EU and US models from stock.
